Should my Small Business have custom software?

Home Page

Yes! It gives you a very smart and fast employee.

Over the years, we have written many custom programs. In all cases, the program allowed the company to do a task rapidly, accurately and with lower skilled personnel. Custom software can apply the knowledge that has taken your firm a long time to acquire and put it in the hands of a new employee. Your company's trade secrets are embedded in the software adding a level of security.

Example 1: When do we send our silver recovery units to the refinery for processing? Used fixer from the lab is run through these units and the steel wool inside displaces the silver in the solution. The recovery units can recover 50 ounces of silver. The trick was knowing when you have processed enough film to yield 50 ounces of silver. Eastman Kodak was kind enough to give the silver content of film type that this company processed. With our program, the lab manager simply entered the rolls of film he processed each day. All he had to type in was a number next to each film type. He was instantly shown the cumulative silver content of the rolls processed. He was also given a projected date when he would reach the 50 ounce target. The lab manager had no idea how the program worked.

Example 2: This company builds custom products and each potential job had to be estimated. Their product was unique and it took an experienced estimator to prepare the quote. Most of them could not write well and had trouble with a computer. They were using Excel to do the estimates and there were many mistakes and poorly written job descriptions. We took their knowledge and put it into a program which allows a new estimator to write accurate and attractive estimates within two weeks. The program calculates all pricing included shipping cost based on real freight rates. It also writes the description. The program generates a quote for the customer and an internal copy with a breakdown on calculations for auditing. The estimators can now handle about 40 quotes a day. This is more than double what they could do without software.

Example 3: This is an extension of Example 2. We took this program and wrote it to run on their web site. Dealers could log into the site and get a less detailed quote with their client sitting in front of them. They could run as many variations as they chose. This satisfied a need of the dealers without costing the company more estimators. We captured all of the quote request in an online database which allowed our client to see what people were interested in.

Example 4: Our client was a media barter company that needed to write magazine insertion orders in four different ways and keep track of how much money they were spending with the publisher and charged to clients. The program also tracked schedules for publication closings and material submission. They had a high volume and information needed to be shared with several departments. They were able to do this with one employee and our program.

We will be happy to discuss you needs via email at no cost to you.
